  • Firstly, the set-up for the Pooja should be according to the traditional methods. The Ganesh Murti should be in the center and the Kalash filled with water should be in the center and front of the Murti.
  • Make sure to drop a Basil (Tulsi) in the Kalash, place the coconut on the Kalash, and circle it with Betel Leaves. Make a Swastika on the Kalash with Kumkum
  • Now the Kalash is ready, place a good amount of raw rice and place the Kalash on it.
  • Light the incense sticks well, and keep flowers where they were kept wherever they were kept during Ganesh Aarti.
  • Prepare the Pooja thali with Diya, Camphor, and a pot for Agni and keep extra Camphor in the Thali so the Agni will be lighted till the Pooja ends.

Family Responsibilities

As the Pooja will begin, the whole family should do Aarti together as the Head of the Family or the responsible person should have the pleasure of doing the Aarti first. After finishing the Aarti, every member present in the family should sprinkle the Akshada (colored rice) on the Ganesh Murti and petals of flowers as the final Namaskar.

Again, the eldest or the most responsible person should gently move the Idol of the Ganeshji as the mark of initiation of the Visarjan. Women of the family should offer sweet and Curd to the Lord. In a red cloth, wrap rice and some cereals as food for the lord during his voyage to Kailash.

Now, it’s time to move the Ganesh Murti from its position. Carefully carry the Ganesh idol and roam all around the house in a circle. Now keep the Ganesha Idol near to the doorstep. If required family members may say a final prayer before saying goodbye to Ganeshji.

It is a legend that during visarjan if a person tells his wishes in the ears of Bappa then the person’s wishes will be fulfilled. The family and others may say a final goodbye to the Ganesh at this place only as now it is time to move the murti out of the house once and for all. The Ganesh idol should not be re-entered in the premises again, as it is a bad omen.

Note, that the Kalash used for Pooja should be carried around with the Ganesh idol during the whole Visarjan journey to the water body.

Final Goodbye
The family may do a final Aarti near the water body where the Idol will be submerged. After the prayer, the women of the house should distribute the Prasadh among the participants of the Aarti.

Now, the Murti should be submerged in the water body. This water body can be anything as it should have water more than the height of the Ganeshji Idol. The Idol should be able to stand fully submerged in the water. Rivers, Sea, ponds, and water tanks are preferable but if you are doing Visarjan at home then a small water body such as a small tank can do too. Collect the sole of the mud of the idol and take it back home.
